A Place in the Sun for All
For decades Acapulco has been a magnet for the rich and famous: a
destination
with beautiful beaches and clear turquoise waters set against a
mountain
backdrop. Acapulco has also always been sophisticated, cosmopolitan and
tolerant.
Acapulco´s “Sans Souci” was the first legitimate gay disco in the
Republic
of Mexico. Gay people felt as welcome as the magnates and actresses
seeking
sun and seclusion in luxury surroundings.
Recently, Acapulco´s reputation has come under a shadow:
allegations
have been made that some of the beaches are dirty; a tour boat sunk
ignominiously
in three feet of water; striking hotel workers got a lot of publicity
as
did taxi drivers operating without permits; an alleged band of
pedophiles
was arrested as were similar groups in Morelia, Nayarit and
Guadalajara.
Acapulco has grown to be a city of more than a million people and is
not
immune to urban ills; but the hotels continue to be an excellent venue
for
conventioneers, honeymooners, as well as budget minded families
The magic is still here, ranging from the seclusion of Las Brisas to
the
torch bearing cliff divers. The sophistication, diversity and tolerance
that
originally attracted the gay community from Berlin, Lisbon, Mexico
City,
Madrid, Amsterdam and the United States and Canada, today still
characterize
Acapulco.
Rumors, especially those based on a misinterpreted fact, do spread like
wildfire;
and there is a rumor circulating in the gay community that Acapulco is
not
what it used to be, that it has lost its tolerance for diversity. NOT
TRUE.
It remains a safe and welcoming harbor for cruise ships and sun
worshipers
of all flags and persuasions.

After checking out
'where to stay', go to the next step [which has a way of separating the
'men from the boys' so to speak] and consider an airline, the second
quickest way to get here, #1now happens to be the Internet.back to index
Airlines.....unlike
many other Mexican destinations, you may come to the conclusion that
you can't get here from there! But perseverance pays off. Don't let
anybody tell you otherwise, there is no place quite like
Acapulco to satiate the gay traveler. Check with a knowledgeable gay
travel agent, but resign yourself to a plane change in the capital if
you are going to use the national carriers [Mañana Airlines or
Aeromaybe, respectively]. Currently there are non-stop flights from
Houston and Phoenix. Seasonally you might be able to find non-stop
flights from Dallas as well. Best to plan ahead, be flexible, and check
all alternatives. Unadvertised charters from the frozen north often are
possible considerations. Hint: Contact our local Canadian
Consulate by e-mail who maintains a list of charters from that part of
the
world, if you get really stuck but are determined. Furthermore, for the
budget-minded, Mexico City frequently is an inexpensive destination.
This
can be combined with a comfortable bus ride [about 35
dollars]
of about 5 hours or a Mexico City taxi on into Acapulco for about 250
dollars!

The next category is the
first thing on everybody's lips, "where's the bars", even
though your lips
are going to find themselves over and around all sorts of other
surprising dishes and local delicacies........they track their chilies
very personally here.

watering-holes frequented by gay visitors and natives. Some are quite
'native' and as always,
exercise caution and best visited with a trusted friend. Remember you
are
in Mexico where male to male eye contact is often held........and
sometimes
it might be a mere beautiful but startled specimen's 'never seen a
white

lips. Besides the seasonal fruits, you can eat well in Acapulco.
restaurants .......by the time you join us, some of these listings indubitably
will
have changed location, name, phone number, or all three! If you
recognize
a familiar name or the description has appeal, make a note or print out
the whole list. Acapulco continues to fill the continuum from flapjacks
to fancy. Expect to find international chains like Tony Roma's and
McDonald's,
but this list deals with the home-grown variety.
But the one thing that
Acapulco is world famous for is its many beaches.

real bad [good], and move here! When this bug bites and the infection
doesn't
pass, you'll want to get in touch with a real estate type to see what's
available. Besides the ‘big boys’ that you can find in the telephone
directory,
everybody you'll meet will either be in the business or have a
brother-in-law
ready to show you your next dream home……the truth is that real estate,
unlike
hairburners for example, are not licensed in Acapulco. Everybody seems
to
be on retainer for a commission either real or imagined. Our list is of

In the past I found most sites about Acapulco
just
that, about and little more. They were slow to respond or
maintained by someone quite removed from the day to day affairs of the
city itself. This one is not! Your
webmaster
lives and breathes acapulco and gets to pause a few seconds every day
.....to
nothing else.... but that special sound of the surf. When you hear it,
you
will know what I mean. It will coax you back again and again.
Gaypulco
is now read by dozens in thousands of countries..... and soon to
participate
in an experimental beaming via string-&-can technology to the
jungle
next door. Everyplace else seems to be covered.
