..........While Acapulco is a walking city that invites the visitor to stroll along the Costera and even climb [a little anyway] the dramatic hills that brace the various colonias or neighborhoods, sooner or later your going to want to get off your dogs and make use of some type of public transit. Ancient school-bus type camionetas are popular and cheap! Everyone is expected to have the proper change and these generally cost 4 pesos throughout the city. If you have to switch buses to reach your destination there are no ‘transfers’, but another 4 pesos…..Along the Costera there is a small fleet of more modern air-conditioned buses that run from Wal-Mart all the way to Caleta for 6 pesos and as a result are a little less crowded. But pick a shady spot if you are going to hold out for the a/c as they are overwhelmed by the ubiquitous vw taxis. For outlying areas, locals make use of the colectivos, but it is the taxis that the tourist most often find to be an easy and cheap solution for moving about. Because there are no meters, agree on a fare BEFORE you start your journey. Depending on your bargaining skills and sometimes the destination, expect anywhere from 20 to 30 pesos for most trips. If your trip transverses the zocalo, do not be alarmed that the fare seems double. That's seems to be just a part of the system.
